Facilitating local livelihoods
ZayoHub services enable communities to generate increased incomes in 2021
ZayoHub offers three services that support the enabling environment for small businesses in remote rural environments – mobile money, women’s microloans and bicycle hire.
Increased incomes
1. Mobile money services in seven communities handled $725,000 in transactions. Of this, $398,000 was transacted by business users, who generated net income of $530,000 from these activities. Without mobile money, 40% of this income would not have been realised – meaning that a total of $216,500 additional income at community level was created by mobile money.
2. Women’s microloans in five communities disbursed $98,860 via 960 loans to women who invested 78% of their loans in livelihoods activities. A total of $47,600 additional income at community level was created through microloans.
3. A total of 4453 one-day bike rentals were made in five communities. Half were for business customers whose activities generated $15,000 in additional income. Users accessing social and health needs saved $5200 on alternative transport costs.
ZayoHubs that operated all three enabling services created financial benefits for users averaging $44,500 per hub per year.
In 2021, these activities facilitated increased income in ZayoHub communities of $284,300.
Women secured 51% of these benefits.
